Humectant
A substance which attracts and holds moisture. A humectant product can draw moisture from the air and hold it to the skin, helping maintain and increase the water content of the top layers of skin. Glycerine, propylene glycol, sorbitol, hyaluronic acid, urea, lactic acid, aloe vera, and honey are examples of humectants.

Hyaluronic Acid (Hyaluronan or Hyaluronate)
Hyaluronic Acid (also called hyaluronan or hyaluronate) is an acid that occurs naturally in the skin (and connective tissue) and helps to retain the skin's natural moisture. It plays a critical role in providing volume to the skin by retaining any water, which creates a plumped effect. It has molecules which can hold several times their own weight in water, and are constantly attracting more moisture to the skin. As we age the effectiveness and amount of hyaluronic acid within our skin decreases.

Hydroquinone
Hydroquinone is a common ingredient in skin lightening products. It is available over the counter in concentrations up to 2 percent in the USA, but is currently banned in Europe. It can, however, be prescribed by a Doctor in concentrations up to 4 percent. Hydroquinone can be very irritating at high concentration, can cause ochronosis with prolonged use, and is tumorgenic in rats. (Maeda and Fukada, J Pharmacol Exp Ther, 1996.)
